Hey freshmen! I'm so excited for you all, and if no else told you we're glad you're here! And in order to show my...gratitude (I guess I can say that but I don't really mean that...hmm whatever) I'm dedicating the FIRST real post TO YALL!Welcome Week! I know a lot of you won't be here until Move-In day (whenever that is) which is smart because where else are you gonna stay. Not with me. I don't trust you as far as I can throw you, BUT I LOVE YOU. Dang when is move in day while I'm talking....I'm guessing it's on August 17.
So anyways here's a LIST of welcome week activities! Of course they're all listed on....http://www.utk.edu/events/events/?theDate=2008-08-18&year=2008&month=08
but minus...the truth. The ugly ugly truth. lol It's not bad at all actually! It's all fun! I suggest you participate in all of it because in order to have a good time in college YOU HAVE GOT TO PARTICIPATE AND MEET PEOPLE! I didn't do that my freshman year...and I regret it so start right and you'll LOVE IT HERE! I do and I didn't wanna be here at first. It's better than Memphis though!
Anyways first event!
AUGUST 17 - 1 - 5pm ~ Passport to Success: Travel TimesTravel times are from 1 to 5 p.m. At this time you will visit all of your classroom buildings with the Passport to Success “passport” in hand. Each building will carry the name of a prominent UT figure, which you will enter into the passport at each location (be sure to carry a pencil or pen). You MUST ALSO VISIT your college academic advising center (undecided students should go to the College of Arts and Sciences) and the library. Return the completed passports to the Student Success Center-Melrose by 5 p.m. to enter a drawing for $500 and $250 gift certificates from the UT Bookstore. Drawings will occur at the Freshmen Picnic.
Ok they didn't do this to my knowledge when I first came. I'm pretty sure they didn't because they just got on this whole Global Takeover thing (that's not the legitimate title....I don't know what it is...you'll find out) BUT this is a pretty good idea if you don't know where your classes are. This is a HUGE campus. It's slick a town and the buildings don't have neon signs to let you know SO you better find out a head of time where your classes are and how long it takes to get to them because you might wanna drop some of them junts because the AG campus is a mofo.
PLUS you get entered into a drawing for a $500 or $250 gift certificate at the UT BOOKSTORE. BAYBAY you might see me with a passport because I'm all about the free 99! Get your text books for free pimpin. That's what's up!
AUGUST 17 - 3- 5pm ~'Karibu Tena' Freshman Welcome Event @ the Black Cultural Center aka THE BCC

This event is designed to welcome freshmen students, especially minority students, to the university. Vendors and organizations attend to inform students about their services and aims. Also, entertainment and food are provided. The Minority Achievement Program will have an organizational table at the event.
This is basically where you're gonna see your first major gathering of black people. And I suggest you go. Get informacion on black organizations and places of interest. I think they have beauticians there too sometimes. And there's a (if memory serves me correctly) a mini stepshow strollcase.

August 17 - 5:30 - 7pm ~ Freshman Picnic @ Circle Park
Free food and entertainment. Passport to Success door prize drawing. Rain Location: Thompson-Boling Arena
All I can remember about Freshman Picnic is hot as hell and like every "free food" event...hot dogs and hamburgers.
August 17 - 7-11pm ~ MEGA FestiVOL @ Humanities Ampitheatre
Dessert, inflatable games and party on the plaza with 30 foot video screens and music. Rain Location: Thompson-Boling Arena
This is "new" but it's a reoccuring theme. Yall thought inflatable games ended in elementary school...no...they comeback with a vengence in college AND YOU ENJOY IT.
AUGUST 18 - 1 - 3pm - Life in the Class Lane
25-minute session providing tips on how to succeed academically. Attendance is essential, as you will learn about the Blackboard on-line course management system used in most UT courses, about what you can expect during your first year in college, and about the strategies, attitudes, and practices you will use to succeed at UT. Please note that representatives will be present to answer your questions about math, biology, chemistry, and foreign language courses.
Note: Attendance is essential not mandatory BUT I suggest you do it anyway. You're probably going to here what they're telling you at every meeting you got to freshman year but they're telling you this for your good. No one wants you to go back from whence you came with no degree and only a semester under your belt. WE WANT YOU TO GRADUATE! Besides it's only 25 minutes. No one wants to get lectured before school starts but this is what you're here for so you better do your best and get all the help you can.

August 18 - 8pm - 12am ~ Splash Jam Pool Party @ T-Recs Aquatic Center
A welcome back celebration with games, prizes, and a DJ by the pool!
YOU HAVE GOT TO BE HERE! I'm excited just thinking bout it! Karibu Tena...tema...whatever that's cool and all but this is what's up. After it's over you're all hype and looking forward to the Alpha's First Day of Class Party (which is MANDATORY for every black freshman...lol even the Nuns be up in that piece yall...it's right!) but maybe someone is gonna have a party the day of....I dunno anymore.
Girls! Please please PLEASE don't participate in the dance competition if it makes a turn toward "Who can twurk the best" especially if you're wearing a swimsuit. Just resist the urge to be nasty. Think "What Would Jesus Do" and sit on down SIT ON DOWN! That ain't want you want. I promise it's not.
Oh yes...there's gonna be stroll offs. Don't get in the way. I know it's not fair but you will get pushed out the way and maybe jabbed. That's just how it is. Don't try to retaliate...you'll probably get mobbed. I'm just warning you. And that goes for any event where there's a "train". Just step back...might have to step all the way back. The only folks who ain't gonna move are the football players because...well who gone fight a football player. NOT ME I TELL YOU THAT!
August 19 - 8 - 11pm ~ Beyond the Borders Party @ the International House aka The I-House
Free food, music, and dancing! Everyone is invited to attend and meet international students from around the globe
I always get there late but Imma be there on time this time if I ain't at work. Go meet the international students learn about another culture have fun and maybe you'll wanna major in Spanish or Italian or French or something. Good times!
August 20 ~ FIRST DAY OF CLASS!!!! yeah boy!!!!!!
I am not a nerd even though it sounds like it from the excitement of the above statement. Everyone is excited about getting back to school because it symbolizes your freedom! But with freedom there comes RESPONSIBILITY. Go to class if you have one. You could sleep in and drop the classes you miss but you'll be pissed if you find out you dropped an easy teacher and you're stuck with some dude with an attitude who can hardly speak English and BAM you gotta F and you out here looking foreclosed on. It's not a good feeling.
But that's a whole nother post. Do the welcome week thing. I didn't post all the activities because I don't think a lot of you would wanna do it, at least I wouldn't so....have fun!
